Prologue

In 1905, a new component was created, but it was never revealed on the Periodic Table of Elements for it could not be stabilized; and so the Central Intelligence Agency kept the discovery within the government’s knowledge. This new element was never tested on animals considering the animal abuse strikes; therefore, it was tested on newborns. In 1908, the first child was injected with the component. Since no immediate changes occurred, the process continued for twenty children, chosen at random, across the nation every ten years. It was not until 1960 that the public discovered a boy about twelve years old with abilities no human should have. The government removed the boy from the general public and took him in to the CIA’s relocation program. They studied him and realized that the element had merged itself into the child’s DNA. When they hit puberty, the component was triggered. Ten years was not long enough for it to become active. The public continued to riot against the government’s secrets; believing that it could save the world, or start a war. It wasn’t until another thirty years later that the people settled down and forgot what had happened. But since the outbreak of news, the CIA went out and searched for the injected people, placing them in relocation programs; taking them from their families and forcing them to become a part of the CIA. But even after the public’s discovery, the testing never stopped. Every twenty years, two random hospitals were chosen, and from those hospitals, a boy and girl were injected. They were taken from their mothers immediately to avoid early discoveries from early maturity. The chances the children remained with their families were least likely. The Central Intelligence Agency has employed over a hundred injected children over the years. More than ten of those children are currently CIA agents, but there is still one more child the agency is searching for. Strangely, no one has reported this female child who should be around sixteen to seventeen years old. It was the CIA’s duty, as well as the affected, to protect their identity. If anyone were to ever find out about the abilities, it was their job to eliminate them.

Scientists continue to research a cure for this component…a cure that will replace the element from the child’s DNA. The “injected” believe that the only possible cure for this is…death.

Part 1 – Attraction

“Let them go,” he said. I watched his two friends pull out my friends from their SUV, crying; pleading.

“No! Please don’t hurt her!” they said, but I ignored it; painful, but crucial. I stared back into his silver eyes, tearing up.

“I really am sorry to do this,” he said as he raised his gun and pointed it at my head, a foot away. Not a difficult shot to miss, unfortunately. I flinched to hear the sound of the safety being released. He placed his finger on the trigger and I slowly shut my eyes.

“Mirs! No! Please! Stop this!” my friends screamed. A tear slid down my cheek as I heard a click; then, a gunshot.

“Miranda!”

Chapter 1

[Miranda Evans]

Age: 17

Height: 5’6

Hair: Dark brown

Eyes: Blue

I pulled up in the parking lot of Carson High in Carson City, Nevada. It was a hundred and ten degrees outside and eighty degrees inside my Porsche Carrera. Ugh. I didn’t want to step outside, but I wanted to go to school. It was May 25th; just two more weeks and I would be through with senior year and onto college, only, I have no clue on what I’m going to do in life. My phone vibrated in my pocket.

Hey Mirs! Where are you? Hurry, the assembly’s starting! –Daniela

Oh yeah; the assembly. This was going to be my last pep assembly. I sighed and stepped out of my car. A huge wave of heat splashed onto my face as I shut the door and locked it behind me.

“Hey Mirs,” David greeted as he walked up to me.

[David Lee]

Age: 17

Height: 6’2

Hair: Black

Eyes: Dark brown

David has been my friend since middle school. He’s been crushing on me since freshman year. David is rather the mysterious kind of guy. I don’t know much about his family or other friends. All I know is that he’s extremely sensitive and occasionally obnoxious.

“Hey David,” I said.

“So, can I walk you to the assembly?” he asked. I smiled.

“Sure, that would be…”

“Mirs!” someone shouted. I looked in the direction it came from and grinned.

“Belina!” I screamed.

[Belina Cortés]

Age: 16

Height: 5’5

Hair: Brown

Eyes: Hazel

We hugged, nearly knocking each other over.

“Um, I’ll just go on ahead…” David started to say. I grabbed his shirt sleeve.

“Come on David, don’t be like that. Let’s go!” I said, linking arms with him and Belina. We skipped to the football field for the assembly. As we entered the gates of Carson High, the smell of freshly cut grass hit my nose. I loved school; not the homework, but the ability to socialize. I glanced around our campus grounds and the first thing that always caught my eyes was the statue of Carson High School’s mascot; the Colts. The Colts was the best team in the state, no matter what sport. You could say our school’s passion was athletics.

“So Miranda, how was your spring break with Jacob?” Belina asked.

“Who’s Jacob?” David butted in.

“He’s my boyfriend. It was…okay I guess,” I replied. This year, I’ve been having a lot of drama with guys, Jacob so far, has been my longest relationship; six months to be exact. I’m definitely not shooting for seven.

“You’re going to break up with him, aren’t you?”

“Yeah, but…I don’t know when’s the best time to tell him.”

“How come I never knew about this boyfriend?” David complained.

“You never asked. Hey, where’s Daniela?” I asked, “She said to meet her right here.” Suddenly, someone’s arm wrapped around David’s neck and he screamed.

“You are too easy!” It was Daniela, our tough girl.

[Daniela Nelson]

Age: 18

Height: 5’7

Hair: Light Brown

Eyes: Green

I met Daniela my freshman year, and what an experience that was! She changed me from super shy to confident and outgoing. I don’t what I’d be without her. Daniela is pretty much a tomboy.

She laughed as David put his head down in shame. This is why I don’t like David back. He’s much too sensitive for me.

“Daniela!” Belina and I screamed. We hugged her, rocking side to side. It felt like we hadn’t seen each other in ages when we greeted. I guess we were this way only because soon, we’d be going our separate ways.

“I am sad to say there are only two weeks left for my seniors here at Carson High. Do your best these last few days you have. You will all be missed,” Principal Gordon was giving a speech at the assembly, “And now, I’d like to introduce a last-minute, new student who will substitute Keith Greenback after his terrible injury during Friday’s football game. I’m sure that with him as well as our other two top players, Sean Reed and Conner Shaw, we will go all the way to the finals. Give a warm welcome to Justin Moore!” Well, this is new. The crowd screamed as a tall boy stepped onto the stage.

[Justin Moore]

Age: 18

Height: 6’2

Hair: Reddish Brown

Eyes: Green

My heart raced to see a guy like him at our school.

“What is that look you have on your face Mirs?” Daniela asked, “I know that look! Remember, you have a boyfriend.” I rolled my eyes.

“She’s breaking up with him you know,” Belina added.

“Oh no, here we go,” I thought. I sighed as the two of them yelled in my ears.

“Why are you breaking up with him?! He’s a good guy!” Daniela shouted.

“She is really stupid to do that.”

“I don’t think so. I think she should break up with him,” David interrupted in. My eyes widened in his response.

“Oh boy, here it comes,” I thought. Belina slapped him across the face as Daniela punched him in the arm.

“Who’s side are you on?!” they roared. David once again, dropped his head in shame. My two best friends continued to yell in my ear. I couldn’t handle it anymore, but then, just my luck, Jacob was in view.
