The rest of the day went by pretty fast, but I still had detention to attend.

“Mr. Kaiser?” I called, knocking on his door. He glanced over for a second then continued his packing.

“I have a family emergency, so you can go ahead and leave. No detention.” Wow…a miracle.

“See you tomorrow David!” I said as he got in his car. I walked over to mine and noticed Belina and Daniela were waiting. I paced myself a little faster to get out of the scorching heat.

“Hey, ready to go?” I said.

“Wait, Mirs. Don’t seem noticeable, but look at your ten o’clock,” Daniela said, “Conner, Sean and Justin are hanging out and looking in our direction.” I glanced over my shoulder. They were all standing by…no way…how could Justin afford a ride like that?! I turned back to Daniela and Belina.

“He has an… Aston Martin DBS! How can he afford a ride like that?!” I exclaimed quietly.

“Can we focus on the guys and not the ride?!” Belina said, smacking me upside my head. I looked over my shoulder again. Sean and Conner weren’t looking at me, but Justin was. He stared at me with a frustrated face, and yet he was unreadable.

“Come on. Let’s go.” I got in the car, followed by Belina and Daniela. I glanced at the rearview mirror and noticed he was still looking. Who was this guy?

“Umm…Mirs? Drive?” Daniela said. I snapped out of it and focused my attention back on my car…my measly Porsche that can never compare to an Aston Martin. We drove out of the parking lot and headed out to Daniela’s house.

“Bye Daniela! I’ll pick you up tomorrow!” I said. That left Belina and I alone.

“Hey, can I go over to your house? I can ask my mom for a ride home,” Belina asked.

“If you want. My mom will be okay with it. She loves you like a daughter.”

“Hey, how’s your dad by the way?”

“Fine. He’s on another business trip… in England this time.”

“Well that’s pip, pip and cheerio!” We laughed.

We pulled up on my driveway and entered my two-story house. It wasn’t anything fancy on the outside, but the minute you went inside…

Marbled floors and mahogany furniture filled throughout the house. The style was pretty simple and modern. It smelled like orchids and roses when we entered.

“Mom! I’m home! And Belina’s here too!” Rebecca Evans was my mom. She was around her mid-thirties and loved to go around places. Mom came out from the kitchen rather quickly, hugging Belina, then me.

“Hi, Mrs. Evans,” Belina greeted.

“You know you can call me Becky. How are you? Are you staying for dinner?” Mom asked.

“No, just for a while.”

“Well, we’ll just be in my room,” I told mom.

“Are you hungry for anything?”

“No thanks, mom!” We dashed upstairs before my mom could be any more caring.

“I love your mom,” Belina said. We entered my room; my sanctuary; painted blue and brown. Why? Because it reminded me of the beach since Nevada doesn’t have one. I love the water, so moving to a dry place was prison to me. Belina sat on my bay window that looked over the front yard.

“So, are you planning to get with Justin?” Belina asked.

“Probably not. I don’t think he likes me.”

“How would you know?”

“Well, remember what I told you at lunch about what happened during my first class with him?” Belina nodded, “Well afterwards, I kind of yelled at him…so I’m positive he hates me…”

“Don’t be so negative. Tell me something positive about him!” I sighed.

“Uhh…well he has the most amazing eyes. They seem so dull at first, but he’s like a mood ring that only changes when he’s angry.”

“Aw… you’re in love!”

“Shut up!” my cheeks started to burn, “Hey, have you ever got the feeling that you just might do something wrong?”

“Only when I take tests.” My worried face transformed into a smile.

“So are you going to call your mom yet?” I asked.

“Uhh, yeah. Could I borrow your cell phone?” I handed it to her and she called her Mom.

“Hello? Mom? Could you pick me up? What?! Okay. Bye.”

“What happened?” I asked.

“Car broke down. Could you give me a ride?” she begged. I sighed.

“Fine.” I grabbed my keys and we headed downstairs.

“Going somewhere?” Mom asked.

“Driving her home. Her mom’s car broke down.”

“Oh. Well, drive carefully sweetie.” I nodded and left the house.

“When are you going to get a car?” I asked Belina.

“When I get money.”

“When are you going to get money?”

“When I get a job.”

“When are you going to get a job?”

“One day.” I sighed, rolling my eyes.

“Alright, we’re here,” I told Belina. She sat up in her seat and gazed out the car window.

“Ugh, I can’t wait to get out of the house,” she said, opening the door.

“Soon Belina; soon.” She shut the car door behind her and waved goodbye. I drove off…

The sun was setting already and the moon was visible in the clear sky. It wasn’t completely full. It was glowing in a bluish color. The street lights turned on. Just then, my phone buzzed.

Hey Mirs, could I get a ride tomorrow? –David

“What was he up to?” I thought. I texted him back.

Umm, okay. What time? –Mirs

Whenever is fine with me.

“How about a few years from now?” I thought, chuckling quietly to myself.

Tomorrow at 7:00 then.

‘Kay. Bye.

I looked back up at the road and nearly screamed. A black figure ran straight across the road into the path of my speeding car. My eyes widened with fear as my hands gripped the steering wheel, turning it to the right with much force. I felt my body press against the car door as my car spun out of control. The car bumped up and down wildly as it went off the road and down the hill. A tree was headed my way. I immediately shut my eyes, and my hearing became more defined. My engine was quiet for a few seconds then suddenly, it revved up. Death was definitely coming for me.

Death is a mysterious thing. People experience different things depending on the situation. In mine, a complete flash back occurred in my head of school today. The thought of never seeing my friends pained me. But death was taking a very long time to hit…I slowly opened my eyes.

Everything was black. I must have died already, but then my headlights turned on and brightened my vision. My eyes squinted at the sudden brightness. I looked at my surroundings and gasped. Was I imagining all this?

I was still on the road and my car wasn’t damaged, I don’t think. I finally looked in front of me and there was that black figure, standing in the beams of my lights with his hands up in the air, as if he was telling me to stop. Two questions bounced around in my head; was I really alive and what in world did this person do?! I could have sworn I drove off the road…

The hood of the figure’s jacket suddenly fell back. I don’t think he could see me through the tinted windows of my car, but I recognized him. My heart stopped and my eyes widened in complete shock and confusion. To think all of this occurred in a matter of seconds and somehow, Justin Moore had saved my life.
