Helpless as a Child

As you lay there as helpless as a child,
I begin to contemplate upon the wonder of life,
for there was once a time,
when you cared for me when I was in need,
when you were there standing with a band aid,
just as I was about to bleed.
You were the one who gave me comfort and safety,
you were the one who read me to sleep at night,
the one comforting me as I woke up screaming from a bad dream as you came into sight,
just sitting there, next to me on my bed,
there was nothing that had to be said,
you knew that all I needed was your presence,
but as I stand here today on this new day,
what once was doesn’t seem to be any more,
for as I my self began to grow up,
sure enough,
you grew with me,
with every day that I became an adult,
was also a day where you became one day closer to death,
the once so strong and loving guide,
I can now only think of as, “please lord don’t let her die”
somewhere along the path of life,
we seemed to have changed the order in which we walked in,
for now, on this new day,
as I stare at you, mom,
I will be the one who comes to you when you are frightened in the night,
I will be the one with band aid if you ever get into a fight,
for now, with all those days that came,
I am the adult, and you,
are so, so much like a child,
but please mom,
don’t, you show any shame,
I love you now as much as ever,
I am still your little baby that could never sleep through an entire night,
I am still your precious gift to the world,
that you would protect in any fight,
I owe everything to you,
and mom, one more thing…
I love you.
