The Fugitives, ch. 2
Chapter 2
I came home late for dinner.
“Where were you?” Mom asked.
“Car trouble.”
“Oh my goodness! Are you hurt, sweetie?” Mom came up to me and checked my head for cuts and bruises, “I don’t know why you must drive that kind of car! I swear; your father needs to take a second thought about buying you any kind of sports car…”
“Mom…” I whined at the lecture she was starting.
“What? I’m telling the truth,” she could tell I didn’t want to hear this. She changed subjects, “So, do you want me to reheat your dinner?”
“No, it’s okay. I’m not that hungry anymore.” I was too shocked to eat. I went upstairs to my room and climbed into bed, turning on the TV.
“Deadly assassin, Charles Derkwood, has escaped prison. Guards say somehow the cell door was malfunctioning. More about it tonight at ten,” a woman announced. An assassin, huh? I shut the TV off and went to my computer. Sighing, I logged onto Messenger. The minute I did, I received an instant message from David.
David says: Hey are you still awake?
Miranda says: Yeah.
David says: Did you see the news?
Miranda says: Yeah.
David says: Scary huh?
Miranda says: Yeah.
David says: Why are you answering ‘yeah’ each time?
Miranda says: Yeah.
David says: Huh?
Miranda says: Oh, sorry. I’ve got my head somewhere else. (That was a lie. I really didn’t want to talk to David.)
David says: Like what?
I sighed and quickly came up with an excuse…
Miranda says: I drove home late today and almost hit Justin Moore.
David says: What?!
Miranda says: Don’t get excited. I didn’t kill him, but, and this may sound weird, but I think Justin did something…freakish.
After saying this, it made me think about the entire incident again. Justin must be some kind of super human to save me from driving into the tree…
David says: What do you mean?
Miranda says: No one must know this, but somehow, Justin stopped my car and saved me.
David says: Hey, I got to go…
Miranda says: What?
David says: I need to go…
Miranda says: Don’t tell anyone!
David says: Real quick; what happened exactly?
Miranda says: I turned and swerved my car off the road, but I ended up still on the road somehow…
David says: Just get some sleep and forget about it. You were probably half asleep at the time.
Miranda says: David…
It sounded as if he didn’t believe me. Well, I couldn’t even believe myself…
Miranda says: …it really did happened.
David says: I believe you, but just forget it. Sometimes knowing too much isn’t a good thing.
Miranda says: Okay.
I guess he was right. Besides, I don’t really want everyone to think I was some loon.
David says: Good night Mirs.
Miranda says: Good night.
Instead of a loud buzzing alarm, my mom’s voice rang in my ears.
“Wake up! You’ve only got ten minutes to get ready for school!” I jumped up in bed and looked at the clock.
“Man!” I yelled. I pushed past mom to my closet, digging through my clothes.
“Here’s your keys and some money for lunch,” she said, smiling. I smiled back.
“Thanks mom!” I pecked her on the cheek and dashed out to the car with a piece of toast in my mouth, my bag on one shoulder, and my keys and cell phone in my hands. I was trying to unlock my car door and text my friends that I was going to be late at the same time.
“Hurry up! We still need to get David!” I yelled at Daniela. I had already picked up Belina. Daniela got in, smiling.
“What?” I asked, staring at her.
“I was IM-ing Sean last night.”
“Ooh. About what?” Belina asked. I ignored them and focused on the road. We arrived at David’s house with fifteen minutes remaining to get to school. I honked.
“David!” I yelled. David stepped out of his house and here’s exactly what happened. My eyes widened; Daniela choked on her gum, while Belina burst out laughing.
“David, what is up with your hair?!” Daniela asked. David’s hair was completely wild, rather than his normal, slicked-back hair. Did he even bother to comb it?
“I didn’t sleep all night…” he said, resting his head against the window. Would he have been up all night thinking about what I told him? I hope not… I noticed Belina pull out a brush from her bag and handed it to David.
“Thanks.” He took the brush from her and brushed his hair flat, “You wouldn’t happen to have any gel in your bag would you, Belina?” She shook her head. Suddenly, Daniela stood up from her seat, licked her entire hand and wiped it on David’s hair, slicking it back.
“What the heck, Daniela! That’s disgusting! Not nice, Daniela! Bad Daniela!” David yelled.
“I’m no dog,” Daniela growled.
“After what you just did, people are going to start thinking you are one! Disgusting!”
“That was pretty sick,” Belina commented. Daniela smiled and sat back in her seat. David didn’t bother to clean his hair. I sighed…
“Seriously guys, starting acting your age,” I said.
We arrived at school with two minutes to spare.
“Come on. Get out of the car David. Don’t be stubborn!” I pulled David out of the car, “Let’s go! The bell’s about to ring.” David left rather quickly. I was in no hurry to get to my first class, nor were Belina and Daniela.
“What a geek,” Daniela commented.
“Oh, Mirs, you forgot to lock your car,” Belina reminded. I pulled out my keys and pressed the lock button on the remote. Suddenly, all three of us flung backwards into the air. I landed on my back and tumbled across the blacktop. Slowly and carefully, I lifted myself off the ground and looked over at the flames and smoke. My car had just exploded.
“What the hell?!” I screamed. I checked on Daniela and Belina. They were both fine; not a scratch.
“What just happened?” Daniela asked.
“We could have died,” Belina murmured. I looked around us and spotted our only three witnesses; Justin, Sean, and Conner. They were looking this way with blank expressions.
“I think someone is trying to kill me,” I said, “If I hadn’t opened my car door manually this morning, I would have died already.”
“Who would kill you and why?” Daniela asked. Two fire trucks entered the parking lot and put out my car. Half an hour passed.
“Mirs!” I looked over to find my mom, calling me.
“Mom!”
“The school called me, are you okay?”
“Yeah.”
“How did this happen?” she asked.
“I don’t know, but we were just lucky.”
“Oh my God,” she cried, holding me tightly against her.
“Mom…” She sighed.
“Oh, sweetie. Now I’m really worried about you…”
“Mom, you should head to work…” I didn’t want her to get emotional. I was fine, that’s all she needed to know.
“Uh..okay. Please be careful. I’ll pick you up after school…”
“It’s okay, I’ll just get a ride…” Mom gave me one good look and then left to her car. She was scared; I could tell.
“You think the insurance company will cover it?” Daniela asked. I glared at her. Why bother calling when they would just call you insane and laugh? Just then, Principal Gordon came up to us; his eyes open so wide that his eyeballs could pop out.
“Can you girls explain to me what the hell this is?!” he was pissed, that’s for sure. We shook our heads. “You girls are extremely lucky to be alive. Can you tell me who might’ve done something like this?! Or wait, is this a senior prank?! I do not approve of this…”
“Principal Gordon, can we just go to class? We had no idea something like this would happen, nor do we even know who might want to do this to us…” He sighed.
“There better not be anymore fishy business going on or I can promise you, girls, that your diplomas will never be in your grasps,” Gordon hissed. We sighed and walked to class. Could today get any worse?
