(Bob Gutowski*)

The Iris
Yesterday I looked at the center of an Iris
the way the yellow meets with purple
in perfect harmony    either coexisting
or overlapping    teasing each other
at the edges    a touch of yellow glowing
through the soft violet petals
accented with a thin wall of white
and yet, when my brush draws yellow
from my palette and touches the purple
petals that I've created    my colors
blend and mix into a shade of greenish
brown that is not seen in nature
or close to the delicate effect I had planned
