ISSUE #12 - JUNE 2009
poetry

grief

(sxc.hu)

My Grief-Stricken Youth

wretched prepubescent melancholic jagged like shards of broken glass
perniciously gnaws within this deux plus ten year olde psychic mill
with wisps of faded memories when time seemed eternal never to pass
which pages of mine life populated by one after another bitter pill
in the figurative sense referring to woebegone friendships with a lass
helping me to reflect on those tumultuous times and take up a quill
thru electronic means tapping into my abysmal bus rides i took to class
trying to conjure up remembrance of events past via this poetic trill.

anorexia nervosa thee most devastating emotional and physical downfall
that actually germinated in those latter grades of elementary school
before manifesting into internal explosive psychological intent to end all
behalf of feeling oppressed and tormented from demons that did rule
within thine impressionable mind whereby temptation of suicide did call
to bring welcome relief from suffocating as if in an infinitely dark pool
ready and eager to take the plunge ala in manner where sky divers freefall
but my late mum (trained as a nurse) nudged starved body to eat gruel
or rather her concoction of nutritious elixir plus tlc made death to forestall
decades into the future that day of reckoning when grim reaper will duel
with this mortal male, who now possesses much more gumption and gall
to confront the ultimate demise, which senescence and death seems cruel
yet while alive with bon vivant health of body, mind and soul, the shots i will call!
